Calculations

Calculate R Values:

To calculate a buildings R-value, sum up all U-values of the various building components as a percentage of the overall structure, then convert your answer to R=1/U.

Sample calculation for 10' x 10' x 8' Room:

  Roof 100 sq ft. 24% x U-.25 = .06
  Wall 288 sq ft. 68% x U-.083 = .056
  Glass 32 sq ft. 8% x U-.1.11 = .089
  Total 420 sq ft.     Total U = .205
          Total R = 4.88

Definitions

BTU -
British Thermal Unit, The quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of one pound of water one degree Fahrenheit.

Thermal Resistance - R - Value -
a unit for the rate of heat flow through a given thickness of a homogeneous or composite material, or construction assembly with or without cavities or reflective surfaces. It is measured by the temperature difference in degrees Fahrenheit between the two exposed faces required to cause one BTU to flow through one square foot per hour. Resistance's may be added.

R -
temp difference F/BTU for 1 sf/hr.

RT -
The total thermal resistance of a construction assembly.

U -
1/RT = Overall Heat Transmission Coefficient.
